Please note that the qualification paths for most events has significantly changed from previous seasons. We HIGHLY recommend that you review the 2007-2008 Athletes Handbook!

We strongly recommend that all fencers interested in attending national championships read chapter 2 in the 2007-2009 Athletes Handbook. Especially 2.5 (Eligibility to Compete); 2.7 (What is a Qualifier); 2.8 (Appeal/Petition Process); and 2.11 (Specific Events).

--- Division Membership ---

You absolutely must be a Metropolitan Division member to compete in the individual qualification events.
If you are not sure what division you belong to, check your USFA card. We will ONLY be going by the master membership list provided by the USFA. If "Metropolitan" doesn't appear next to your name, you will not be allowed to fence. We don't care where you live/work/study/fence, what mistakes were made, who you talked to at the national office, or what your favorite ice cream flavor is... if you are't identified as a division member by the master list, you will not be allowed to fence. If you are having issues, resolve them with the USFA BEFORE the event and insure they update the master list to reflect the changes.

Members of clubs participating in the team qualification events do not have to be division members, per USFA guidelines.

--- Registration ---

Register via AskFRED (per the chart above) to avoid late fees at the door for on-site registration. After you register, confirm that your name appears under the correct events in the "Whose Pre-registered" list in AskFRED.

You must show up for any events you register for, even if the number of registered competitors is less than the number of available qualifying spots. Fencers, even those that have registered, who do not appear in time for their events will be scratched and will not be submitted as a qualified competitor to the national office. The number of entered competitors, their placements in the event and/or the number of available qualifying spots will not be taken into consideration.

Be there and be on time. If you have any problems registering, please immediately contact the club which is hosting that event. As outlined by the USFA, attendance at an out of town school is not a valid excuse. We will be highly unsympathetic towards any excuses short of natural disaster, war and/or death (and for those at war, you technically belong to the National Division, so even that won't work!).

--- Age Restictions ---

Per chapter 2.5 of the Athletes Handbook (Eligibility to Compete):

Event Birthyear (All years based on the Gregorian calendar)
D1A / D2 / D3 / Senior Team 1888 - 1994
Junior / Junior Team 1989 - 1995
Cadet 1992 - 1995
Y14 1993 - 1996
Y12 1995 - 1998
Y10 1997 - 2000

There is no leeway for "close" in the above guidelines. If your birthday was December 31st before the minimum year or January 1st after the latest year of the event you want to be in, tough cookies.

--- Division 3 Qualification ---

Please note that per USFA guidelines, the Metropolitan Division does not hold separate Division 3 qualifying events. Qualification for Division 3 events is through finishing in the top 25% of D & Under fencers in the Division 2 qualifying event for the same weapon. Therefore if you want to qualify for Division 3 events, it is recommended that you enter the Division 2 qualifying event in the same weapon.
